7 Tips for Your Trip to Dubai

Visiting a new country can be exciting, but it is always important to prepare for navigating a new place and culture! If you are planning on traveling to Dubai in the future, there are a few tips and tricks that can help make your vacation more relaxing. Check out these tips for a fun and safe trip to Dubai.

1.     Know When You Should Tip

Tipping for services in Dubai is a bit different from the American expectations of tipping. Restaurants typically include a tip on your bill for your servers, so need to worry about that! You also don’t need to worry about tipping your drivers. You should tip your baggage carriers and grocery store baggers, however.

2.     Public Displays of Affection Should Be Avoided

Public displays of affection are not only frowned upon but can actually land you in jail in Dubai! It is considered extremely offensive in Dubai’s culture and should be avoided at all costs. Do not hold hands or kiss anyone in public during your trip.

3.     Always Ask Permission When Taking Pictures

This is standard for any vacation you go on, but never take a photo of a stranger without their permission. This is especially important when it comes to Muslim women. Unique to Dubai, it is also important to not take any photos of:
·        Military buildings
·        Government buildings
·        Airports

4.     How to Purchase and Consume Alcohol

Alcohol is legal to consume in Dubai if you are at least 21 years old. You can purchase alcohol from bars, restaurants, and hotels with no problem. However, if you are looking to purchase alcohol and bring it home with you, you will need a special permit and must buy it from a licensed business. Laws restrict anyone from being publicly intoxicated, as well as drinking and driving, so make sure you are drinking responsibly!

5.     Use a Driving Service

Traveling around Dubai can be a stressful experience if you are looking to use public transportation. Taxi drivers are not always very knowledgeable about the city so getting where you need to go if you are unfamiliar with the area can be a huge hassle.

Fortunately, there are many great personal driver companies around Dubai that you can use. Our personal favorite is Comfort Drive, but there are many others! Do your research to find the service that works best for your needs.

Chauffeur services have many benefits:
·        Peace of mind that you are traveling safely
·        More knowledgeable drivers
·        Booking for your entire trip so you always have a way to travel
·        Valet parking
·        Reasonable prices

6.     Dress Modestly

Dubai is definitely not the place to bring your bikini or any tight clothing. Make sure you pack a wardrobe for your vacation that is modest. Flashy and revealing clothing is offensive in the culture. For women’s clothing, do not pack:

·        Short dresses, skirts, or shorts ·        Anything form fitting
·        Anything transparent
·        Low cut dresses or tops

Men should also avoid walking around topless at all times. Make sure to dress properly to respect the culture of Dubai and avoid attention. These rules may seem restricting, but it is always important to respect the culture of the country that you are a guest in.

7.     Know the Rules of Ramadan

If you are visiting during Ramadan, it is important to respect the Muslims in Dubai who are participating. Ramadan occurs during a month-long period each year, and the dates vary from year to year. Make sure to check if your vacation falls during Ramadan.

If you are visiting during Ramadan, refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking in public from sunrise to sundown. Muslims are practicing fasting during this period of time, and it is extremely disrespectful to do these things in public.

A trip to Dubai is an exciting opportunity. By following these travel tips, you can make sure that the trip is not only a success but that you are an exemplary guest.
