The Best Cave Hotel in Cappadocia, Turkey
Some of you may think cave hotel as a theme park to you, but it’s the norm here in Cappadocia, Turkey!
Cappadocia is one of the coolest, and most fascinating regions in Turkey, I’m telling you!
Up until two million years ago the region was literally a sea of lava over 150 meters (500 feet) deep. After the volcanoes that surround Cappadocia stopped erupting that sea of lava turned to rock—relatively soft rock that’s easily eroded and dug into. Hence the otherworldly rock formations, underground cities and cave hotels all over the region.
There are many types of accommodation available in Cappadocia from boutique cave hotels, rooms and backpacker hostels; something to suit every budget, but in the land of fairy chimneys and lunar landscapes, I found myself staying at Fresco Caves Suites and Mansions.
It was a good move to make because the Fresco Mansions was everything I wanted it to be. The authenticity of the rooms and the hotel itself, gave emphasis to a serene atmosphere that instantly made me relax.
The Hotel
Fresco Mansions is one of the leading cave hotel one could ever stay in the Cappadocia region. It has been bought from the first owner and first mayor of Ürgüp (small town in Cappadocia) merely 5 years ago. It is family-owned as well and the family is heavily involved in running the hotel business. Some family stories could be seen from the pictures on the wall.
According to their official website, the name “Fresco” comes from the numerous frescos inside the mansions.
Anyways, this is a renovated structure converted into a boutique hotel with combination of modern comforts with the historical concept of being in a cave. The cave hotel has excellent rooms, large open courtyards, and brilliant views! It’s in a good location and an excellent base from which to explore the area of Cappadocia.
Multiple common areas are available for relaxing and reading. Also, there are hammocks outside on the terraces (shared with other room nearby) with a view of the city for outdoor relaxation.
Staff and Hospitality
When I arrived to the hotel, I was I got very nice surprise: a room upgrade from a standard room to a Deluxe room! 🙂
I was introduced to the owner, Mrs. Gamze in the moment as well. She was very warm and welcoming when she approached me. Literally, she was the perfect host.
Besides, the staff at this cave hotel was well prepared. They provided excellent and attentive hospitality. They were very willing to assist me in making calls and other arrangements. Pretty much, all the airport transfers, balloon tours and private tours can be made through the hotel, which is very very convenient. Be sure to ask!=
The Room
When I entered in my room, it was like a dream to me! It was such a unique feeling, stunning architectural design and light takes you to an era you may be seeking for a long time.
I stayed in Room 107, Delikli Mağara, one of original cave rooms. The room was equipped with all that you need and more, and is absolutely elegant, to say the least. It was a room part built in to the cave, with carvings in the rock above the bed head.
There was a large bathroom suite—big enough to play table tennis there!—with separate bath and shower. It had every facility even though it was underground. Taking a bath in the tub was my favorite part. It gave me a sense of peace and tranquility
The room also had a very nice lounge area with tv, kettle and fridge.
Their room services were beyond my expectations! They would tidy up my room when I go out and they even folded up my clothes that were laying around the room. Couldn’t ask for more!
Features of the room:
- Sofa
- LCD TV
- Digital satellite
- Bath Tub
- Shower
- Phone in the room and bathroom
- Minibar
- WiFi
- Reading lamp
- Air conditioning

Mrs. Gamze was so nice and showed me other rooms and suites. Some rooms had a jacuzzi instead of a bath! Honestly, this would be one of my most favorite hotels I’d ever stayed in.
Dining
Breakfast was the highlight. Their breakfast buffet would be one of the best I’ve ever had. The breakfasts were very interesting and had some special features of this region. Nonetheless, I fell in love with all homemade jams, pastries, and gozlemes (a savoury traditional Turkish flatbread)! I mainly liked the carefully selected menu including omelette options.
My Experience
Staying at the Fresco Mansions Hotel in Cappadocia was a magnificent experience I will always remember. From the moment I walked into the hotel, to the moment I departed, the staff exceeded all our expectations. I definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Cappadocia!
