Seriously, Bicycles are everywhere in Amsterdam! They have traffic lights for bikes! They have a bicycle road! Bicycles are highly admired here.
Since it is summer and everybody’s out riding their bikes, it has been surely a chaos for me to ride my bike through their bike traffic.
Truth to be told, everything in Amsterdam are within 30 minutes of walking distances. I’ve walked around the last time I visited here, but it’s not the same as riding bikes because it is the fastest way to get around in Amsterdam too.
Fact: Bikes have the first right of way in their traffic system. Pedestrians come second and cars come last, as usual. Isn’t that interesting? Most of the time in the US, pedestrians would come before bikes.
The reason for that is because the riders of the bikes would have to spend a lot of energy to start pedaling again on their bike if they had to stop to avoid hitting someone or something. That’s why they must have their way to allow the riders to ride their way through the city fluently.
Their bike traffic is so efficient that they do have traffic lights for bikes. You’ll be able to see a bike symbol with traffic colors lights. That’s how you know you gotta stop. They even have traffic directions for bikes that are separate from sidewalks and the road for cars.
TIP: If you’re walking around in Amsterdam, I strongly suggest you to keep an eye out on bikes and DO NOT walk into their bike roads. They will yell or shout at you if you do that and block their way. You can’t intervene the bike traffic flow.
