Does Your Business have a Visual Tech Strategy?

Everyone can absolutely agree that marketing is necessary. Marketing is obviously important. But marketing without visuals is like trying to host a dinner party with no food. Yeah, the analogy sounds weird, but you wouldn’t post a dinner party, well, any party without some food, right?

Well, that’s basically the premise here. That lack of understanding of all the important aspects in marketing is a top threat to businesses. You can talk all day about brand awareness and engagement and storytelling, but if everything looks flat or outdated or painfully basic, people click away before the message even loads.

Now, the chances are super high that you’re just as guilty of doing that yourself, right? Like, there’s no denying it because everyone is like that. Everything online is competing for attention, only the captivating actually gets to stay. And the wild part is that visuals used to be this optional “nice-to-have” addition, like the little bow on top of your strategy. Well, that “bow” isn’t enough, and you absolutely better believe that everything revolves around them. Basically, you’re going to need to use more technology.

Social media, websites, ads, product pages, newsletters, presentations, and even those random behind-the-scenes videos that end up doing better than actual campaigns. It’s all visual. This can’t be an afterthought, and yeah, that’s why so many brands keep falling behind without even realizing it. They’re still trying to do “marketing,” just regular, boring, basically marketing, but the rest of the world is moving into full-blown visual ecosystems.

Visuals Carry the First Impression

Again, like above, use yourself as an example, because you’re probably not stopping for just anything when scrolling, right? Yeah, people see your visuals long before they hear your story. That’s how it works now. They scroll, they glance, they swipe past whatever feels boring or dated or too stock-photo-like. Again, you’re guilty of this too; your whole team is. Basically, visuals determine the attention span. They also determine if someone even sticks around long enough to understand what the business does.

Again, go back to yourself and just think about your own actions. No one reads a caption if the thumbnail looks off. No one clicks on an ad if the picture is confusing. No one stops scrolling for a video that looks like it was filmed during an earthquake. Visuals are the filter. No one does that, and that includes you as well. You and plenty of others decide if a message even gets a chance.

Bluntly put, you can have perfect messaging, great writing, and the strongest value proposition, yet still feel invisible online. Because visually, nothing is pulling people in.

There’s Some Strategy Behind Your Gear

A lot of businesses hear “visual tech” and instantly assume it means buying an expensive camera or hiring a videographer for one afternoon. Which, yeah, makes sense because that’s technically the “traditional route” to all of this. But visual tech is the whole system around creating and delivering visuals that feel intentional. Okay, it might be obvious enough, and feel free to look at YouTube tutorials (plenty of breakdowns on there).

It’s the lighting, the audio, the editing workflow, the file organization, the motion assets, the AI enhancers, and the storytelling structure. So, for the most part, it’s not about owning a camera. It’s about knowing what type of visuals your audience responds to and having the right tools to create those visuals consistently (think about perfume commercials, there’s always some sort of consistency with their style).

It might be drone shots, which, thankfully, drones are more affordable nowadays, like the DJI Neo 2. Cameras aren’t all that expensive either, especially second-hand ones, gimbles are all that expensive (only brand new ones are), and software, especially AI editing software, is pretty affordable too.

Video is Pretty Much the New Default Format

Well, it’s hard to say if it’s like this forever, but at least for right now, that’s what’s capturing the attention of your average person. But yeah, to a degree, scrolling online now feels like watching hundreds of micro-movies. It’s hard to say if this is good for the eyes or brain or not, but that’s just how it all is. Basically, everything’s moving, so it’s animated (unfortunately, a lot of it is AI slop), and you have to keep in mind that. Everything’s trying to catch the eye for two seconds.

So, think about yourself, you don’t really care about static images when you see them, right? Well, maybe it’s best not to bother with them either. Sure, there’s a time and place for them, like in blog posts, online magazines, and ecommerce listings; those are all totally fine and normal.  But only relying on static images basically means you’re stuck in the past (which you don’t want).

But Do You Need a Whole Crew?

No, absolutely not! No production crew is needed at all, or a giant studio, or movie-quality tech and software. Now, with that all said, you do need a setup that makes filming easy enough that it doesn’t feel like a chore. So, that means good lighting, decent audio, and some sort of stabilizer for your footage. Now, yeah, it’s going to take some time to look professional, and yes, here’s a learning curve if you’re doing this all yourself (as a lot of businesses end up doing anyway).

Try Not to DIY Everything

Okay, sure, just right above it was mentioned that a lot of businesses will do their own visual strategy, they’ll do all the work for the production process. Now, just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should always do it. Alright, so heavy emphasis on the “always” part. Well, tech can only take you so far. There comes a point where the visuals need a trained eye.

Sometimes that means outsourcing the strategy, not the entire production. It’s totally fine to look into a creative agency since it can help define your style, your structure, your visual identity, your tone, and your overall look. Sometimes there are freelancers who are professionals, who could even be an option too.
