Hiking up Pedra da Gávea – A Scenic View of Rio de Janeiro!
*This trip is highly recommended by Deaf Brazilians*
Our Pedra da Gavea Mountaineering Tour involves a 2 – 3 hours hike, with a short rock climbing part (15 meters/49 feet), and can be a bit challenging for travelers without experience, or for casual hikers.
Once there at the summit, the most beautiful view of the city can be contemplated!! Justin and I can confirm that =)
Pedra Da Gavea Information:
Pedra da Gavea is an enormous rock surrounded by native, lush vegetation, in the Atlantic Rainforest. This massive rock is composed of gneiss and granite, and because of its location, it has been eroded by the elements.
As time went by, the damage caused by nature gave the vertical face of the rock, the appearance of a human face. This natural incident led to a lot of speculations on whether it was all caused by nature or by some ancient civilization.
Portuguese explorers gave the mountain, in 1502, the name of Gavea, due to its resemblance to a crow’s nest (a structure in the upper part of the main mast of a ship that is used as a lookout point). So the name Pedra da Gavea basically means Crow’s Nest Stone.
