Up to 100 surfers daily hit the waves of world’s largest surfing spot in the Eisbach München, a small man-made river branch of the Isar River that runs through Munich’s central park called Englischer Garten München.
Surfers, even professionals, from all over the world have been coming here to surf since 1970s, but surfing in this river was not allowed until 2010!
Tony Hawk once came here to “learn” how to surf. Not kidding!
They also host annual surfing competitions here back then, but now they would build an outdoor artificial wave next to the city’s airport for the European River Surfing Championships annually since 2012.
I’m quite impressed myself because I do see kids line up to surf. They must be that good because Eisbach is no easy ride, with only experienced surfers allowed to dive in. Signs warn inexperienced river surfers not to attempt surfing – rocks, strong currents and lack of space combine to make getting in the water.
It’s not warm either as surfers wear wetsuits to keep themselves warm.
Cool, huh?
