Pottery and carpets serve as important symbols and traditions that have been carried through the years in Turkey.
I learned how to create a pot and lid on a potter wheel myself in Cappadocia, Turkey. Definitely a fun and messy experience!
However, it is important to learn about such customs/practices when traveling and I learned one thing about their marriage culture.
Culturally, women weave the carpets and men sculpt pottery. The expert there explained me that a carpet with fringes tied together symbolizes that a woman is ready for marriage. On the other hand a man is ready for marriage if he is able to sculpt a lid that is a perfect fit to a pot. If one of them cannot do either, he or she cannot get married.
Interesting, huh?
